Tough Love
October 2014

What is a Tough Love group to me?

Over the past few weeks I have attended the Tough Love Group held on Monday evenings evenings from 18h30 to about 20h15.

I have never known exactly what the support group was about and the reasoning behind it, until I attended one. My first group meeting was interesting, learning about everyday problems in families. It opened up my eyes about what everyday people are going through. It made me realize that everyone has gone through some sort of struggle and the group allows you to share your struggles and also your accomplishments with each other where no one can judge you or go home and tell the world about your problems. The saying ‘What happens at Tough Love stays at Tough Love’ is 100% true in every way.

A small fee of R20 is donated by each person attending, although this is not compulsory. All proceeds go towards Tough Love South Africa which is a nonprofit organization.

Each person in my Tough Love group has helped themselves and their fellow Tough Love members in a way that even a family member or a friend is not always able to do. What I love most about this group is that I am not judged in anyway, I am not looked down on or feel that I do not belong. I get the advice you want and the help you need.

The group is helping me build my tough love for any future problems I might have to face and it has already helped me build up the confidence I need in order to help get through the tough life we have all had to go through along the way. No matter what the problems are, the group is here to help you and guide you in the right direction.

Welcome to our first edition of the Ward 32 Newsletter.

We live in a very exciting City undergoing many changes, facing numerous challenges and also seeing many victories. As residents of Ward 32, the Ward newsletter has been designed to keep you informed and communicate successes within the Ward. Ours is one of the biggest wards in the City, naturally diverse in nature and extremely vibrant. Through better communication and interaction we can improve service delivery, foster collaboration and unity across Ward 32.

Introduction of the elected Ward Committee

On Tuesday 5 September, the newly elected Ward Committee had our first meeting at the Klipfonteinview  Multi-purpose centre. The meeting served as a formal introduction and an opportunity for each portfolio member to share their vision and ideas for the Ward. It was agreed that we would host public meetings across the Ward to allow members of the community to interact with the new team. A tour of the Ward has also been scheduled, which would be an opportunity for each member to familiarise themselves with the challenges associated with their portfolios. Dates of public meetings and the Tour will be communicated once confirmed.

Petitions

Please follow the link to sign our petitions.

1.      Buccleuch- Demand for River Clean-up

It has been almost a year since the floods that devastated our City and our suburb. There has been little effort by the City, namely City Parks and JRA, to rehabilitate the riverine area which was damaged in the storm. We, the residents of Buccleuch, demand swift action to be taken by the aforementioned entities in addressing this issue and we further urge the City Of Johannesburg to implement more permanent precautionary measures in anticipation of the rainy season.

2.      Greenstone- Traffic calming measures before we lose a life

For many years the residents of Greenstone have demanded traffic calming measures in and around the area .We have seen a number of near fatal accidents regulary occuring in the same roads/sections in Greenstone, yet JRA engineers have ignored our plea for the installation of traffic calming measures.

The residents of Greenstone demand traffic calming measures on Black Rock Road and Stoneridge Drive specifically within close proximity of  Green Valley Shopping Centre.

Traffic Calming measures

3.      Modderfontein (Valley Road/JHB Road)- residents against JRA replacing traffic circle with traffic lights

Installing traffic lights at these intersections will negatively impact the residents living in and around the Lakeside Shopping centre. The residents of Modderfontein believe traffic circles are better than traffic lights for a number of key reasons:

Firstly, safety. Vehicles enter the circle at low speeds, 15-20KM/h. should there be an incident in the circle the risk of serious injury is low. Traffic circles eliminate the ‘beat the light” scenario which helps to negate T-bone collisions which more often than not lead to serious injury. The fact that one does not have to stop completely at a traffic circle also reduces the risk of hijacking and street vendors/window washers/smash and grab opportunists to mention a few.

Secondly, congestion. Traffic circles greatly alleviate the stop-go effect caused by traffic lights. It’s this stop and go effect that adds to traffic congestion. This is made worse should there be a power failure and the traffic lights stop working all together.
Thirdly, maintenance. Traffic circles cost less to maintain on a yearly basis if compared to traffic lights.
